What’s the difference between sterling silver and gold-plated necklaces?

  • Sterling silver necklaces (like most of ours) are made entirely from 92.5% pure silver alloyed for strength - they’re long-lasting, skin-friendly, and easy to polish back to their natural shine.
  • Gold-plated silver necklaces have the same 925 silver base with a layer of gold on top, giving you the warmth of gold with the durability of silver underneath.

Choosing sterling silver or gold-plated silver ensures your necklace keeps its quality, especially for everyday and coastal wear.

What does “925 sterling silver” mean?

“925 sterling silver” means that the metal is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (commonly copper). This standard gives the silver strength and durability while keeping its beautiful bright white tone. At Cove & Coast we use 925 silver for our necklace chains and pendants to ensure long-lasting quality, especially in beach-style, everyday wear scenarios.

Can I wear my necklace on the beach or while swimming?

We don’t recommend wearing any necklace - even sterling silver - in the ocean or pool. Saltwater, sunscreen and chlorine can cause dullness or tarnish over time, and sand can scratch delicate surfaces.

If you do wear your silver necklace at the beach, rinse it gently in fresh water afterwards and dry it completely before storing. This will help preserve its shine and prevent long-term damage.
